3D-Rendering oder Produktfotografie: Budget sinnvoll einsetzen

Use logistics, product readiness, variant count and future reuse to decide whether photography, CGI or a hybrid workflow is the more economical asset strategy.

The most expensive mistake is choosing a technology because it simply “sounds better”. Photography and CGI are two tools for different problems. If the product already exists, is easy to bring into a studio and you need only a few natural views, photography usually wins on simplicity. If the product has dozens of variants, is large, exists only in CAD or will be changed regularly, a 3D model starts working as a reusable asset.

When photography has the advantage

  • The product is finished and physically available.
  • Natural texture, small imperfections and the “real” character of the material matter.
  • You need only a limited number of views and do not expect frequent construction changes.

When 3D starts to pay off

  • You have many colours, configurations or equipment variants.
  • You want to show the product before a prototype exists.
  • You need packshots, close-ups, animation and arranged scenes from one source asset.
  • The product is difficult to handle logistically: furniture, shelving, machinery or built-in structures.

The best option is sometimes hybrid

In ecommerce, a mix often makes sense: a technical 3D model for packshots and variants, plus photography for lifestyle materials. The customer does not need to know which rendering engine was used. They need to see the product clearly, credibly and in the right context.

Mini-checklist before pricing

  1. Count the final views and variants you actually need.
  2. Check whether you have CAD, drawings or a complete set of reference photos.
  3. Define where the visuals will be used: store, marketplace, catalogue, advertising or instructions.
  4. Decide whether the assets should remain easy to update six months from now.
