Image cutouts and background removal for ecommerce

When to use a clipping path, when a mask is required, how to preserve edges and shadows, and how to prepare clean white or transparent product images.

Background removal is not just deleting pixels around a product. The correct method depends on edge complexity, transparency, reflections, hair-like details and whether the final image needs a natural contact shadow.

Choose clipping path or mask deliberately

Hard-edged products can often use a precise vector clipping path. Soft edges, fabrics, hair, smoke, glass and semi-transparent materials normally require a mask.

Protect real product geometry

Do not trim handles, cables, reflections, holes or thin details simply to make the silhouette easier. Compare the finished cutout with the source image at 100 percent zoom.

Decide between white and transparent output

Marketplaces often require a white background, while design systems and compositing workflows benefit from transparent PNG or WebP. Export the format required by the destination.

Keep or rebuild shadows intentionally

A natural shadow can anchor the product. If the original shadow is removed, rebuild it consistently rather than leaving a floating object.

Use descriptive filenames and ALT text

File names should be understandable where practical. ALT text should describe the image in context, not repeat a list of search phrases.

Run a final ecommerce QA

Check halos, jagged edges, colour shifts, transparency, dimensions, compression and the consistency of the whole product set before upload.
